Why I started Bonsai House

🌱 A Story of Survival, Healing, and Hope

By Laura Bryant | Founder of Bonsai House | Author of REACH

At 15 years old, I stood before a judge and was declared emancipated.

On paper, it looked like freedom, but in reality, it was abandonment dressed up as independence.

I left that courtroom without guidance, family, or a safety net. I was still a child, carrying adult-sized trauma, expected to figure out life on my own. I learned quickly how cold the world could be to a girl without support, how fast hope fades when no one shows up for you.

But I also learned something else.  That healing is possible, and identity can be restored.  Even the most fragile seed can grow strong roots in the right environment. That belief is what gave birth to Bonsai House.

🌸 Why Bonsai?

The bonsai tree, though small, is mighty. With intentional care, its roots deepen, its shape strengthens, and it symbolizes resilience and transformation. That’s the kind of growth we nurture in the girls we serve. Young women coming from foster care or difficult home situations who are too often overlooked, rushed into adulthood, or left to carry trauma they didn’t cause.

At Bonsai House, they don’t just survive; they are seen, supported, and strengthened.

We provide a safe, structured home that offers trauma-informed care, life skills training, mentorship, and the space to rediscover their voices and purpose.
